A New Paradigm in Pediatric Physical Therapy
A body isn't just a body. Our internal and external environments play a huge role in how our body functions and how we show up in the world. First it is important to understand the our human body is made up of interpenetrating energy fields that interact with its physical and cellular systems. In this thought process, disturbances in these energy systems are what cause imbalances and eventually disease. Physical, psycho-social, emotional, energetic, and environmental factors can have an individual and/or combined impact on our health and wellness. In pediatric physical therapy, it is beneficial to the whole health and function of the child to consider and explore the impact of these factors in addition to the examination of the typical physical factors impacting function.
So What Makes Functional and Holistic Therapy Different?
Traditional Physical Therapy for kids involves looking at the physical mechanisms that impact development and function then attempting to address those issues. These may include limits in range of motion, muscle weakness, poor endurance, increased or decreased muscle tone, poor coordination, etc. Holistic physical or functional therapy looks to consider other aspects that may be impacting access to improved function along with the physical factors. For example, a child with cerebral palsy may receive a consultation that includes also looking at medication impacts on cellular health, food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies, heavy metal exposures, and typical environmental culprits such as mold, diet and water sources. Alternative healing practices may also be discussed, recommended or included as an adjunct to therapy such as sound and light therapy, vibration therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, nutritional supplements and dietary changes. The more balanced the body is the better the child will be able to access new movement capabilities and most importantly, better health and function across all areas of development.
